Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)

This new technology produces high quality images of teeth and jaw bones with a radiation dose of 5 to 100 times less than conventional CT. It is possible to reconstruct the images in any direction. Newer devices have reduced the radiation dose of CBCT equal to 2 panoramic radiographs.
The most common uses of CBCT in dentistry are:

  • Bone evaluation before implant treatment (scientifically and forensic issues require CBCT or pre-implant tomography)
  • Evaluation of the position of incisors and their relationship to the surrounding anatomical structures including the mandibular canal and maxillary sinus
  • Evaluation of dental and jaw fractures
  • Detailed assessment of TMJ
  • Three-dimensional cephalometry
  • Sinus evaluation
  • Evaluation of jaw lesions
  • Evaluate the shape and size of periodontal problems and it’s used in whatever cases that conventional radiography is unable to accurately assess

It should be noted that the purpose of prescribing CBCT (for example, implant treatment or…) must be mentioned in the prescription.
